Just Out of Curiosity …

Today, I was mailed a flyer from Anthem Blue Cross that gave a list of the things that this insurer considered to be “preventative care”. Americans can go to HealthCare.gov to read what the federal government has, by law, included under “preventative care”. I wondered how well these two lists matched each other.

I have already canceled my health insurance policy with Anthem Blue Cross. So, this blog is basically an exercise designed to satisfy my curiosity about how well, or how poorly, this insurer is following the laws regarding the types of health treatments and tests that are officially considered to be “preventative care”.

Power utility makes offer over bushfire

Landowners in the Victorian regional centre of Horsham who joined a class action against electricity utility Powercor after losing property in the December 2009 bushfires have been offered a conditional settlement which may have implications for insurers.

The settlement in the Victorian Supreme Court last week will see Powercor picking up 66% of the cost of all losses from the fire. The payout to the 67 landowners who joined the class action is expected to be around $40 million.

The Horsham fire that was the centre of the court case was caused by sparks from a fallen powerline. The resulting blaze destroyed 13 homes and the local golf club.

Powercor was accused of negligence by failing to ensure the upkeep of power poles.

Grocery Workers Strike Over Health Insurance Averted

The potential grocery workers strike in Southern California has been averted. After eight months of negotiations over contracts, there has been a deal that the union and the store owners have agreed to. The workers have been offered access to affordable comprehensive health care.

Last week, the union that protects grocery store workers issued a 72 hour notice to cancel a contract extension. This meant that the workers could have gone on strike as early as last weekend. Fortunately, this didn’t end up happening.

The reason for the strike had to do with health insurance.

QBE wins brokers award Number 10

QBE has won the National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA) General Insurer of the Year award for the 10th consecutive year.

The keenly contested award was made at the NIBA Convention opening ceremony in Sydney yesterday.

Allianz and CGU were the other finalists. The award is based on the votes of NIBA brokers, and is open only to insurers which operate nationally.

NIBA President David Duffield said brokers were asked to nominate the general insurer they considered performed best overall on 10 service and product factors, with the ratings analysed independently.

As varied as the trucks are, so too is the fuel consumption which is why we’ve included the yearly gas needed to run the truck each year if you’re in the market to buy.
