Research released on hip treatments

Research presented recently at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicines Speciality Day in San Francisco reveals treatment for hip conditions should not rest only on MRI scans.

The research resulted in a study that evaluated 45 volunteer subjects who had no history of hip symptoms, pain, injury or previous surgeries with each participating receiving an MRI scan that was reviewed by three different radiologists.

“The hope with a study like this is improved treatment and decision-making for physicians who are dealing with hip disorders,” said Dr. Bradley Register, lead author of the study.

Maryland Court Upholds $151,000 Award in Dog Shooting

Marylands second highest court has upheld most of a $151,000 jury award against a man sued by his neighbors for shooting two of their pet dogs.

Jeffrey Lynn Hurd of Williamsport was sued after shooting one familys dog in 2007 and another neighbors dog 2008. In 2010, a Washington County Circuit Court jury ordered him to pay the families, a decision Hurd later appealed to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that a three-judge panel of the Court of Special Appeals issued an opinion on Jan. 24 upholding all but $6,000 of the award. The court also ruled Hurd must pay 90 percent of the cost of the appeal.

Accidental Death Benefit

Because of most people are familiar with the phrase double indemnity the accidental death benefit rider is thought to be one that provides double the death benefit of your policy in the event of death resulting from an accident. It is true that this is how it works but there are life insurance companies that allow applicants to buy multiples of this rider…e.g. three times the face amount of the policy would be paid should they die by accident. For a small additional premium you can add the accidental death benefit rider to your life insurance policy. It does not matter whether or not you purchase term life insurance or permanent life insurance.

North Dakota Fatalities Up, Especially in Booming Oil Patch
